Thoracic Surgeon-  Director of Thoracic Surgery/ Medical Director of the Multidisciplinary Thoracic Oncology Program

Maine Medical Center and the Department of Surgery are seeking a Thoracic Surgeon to lead the Thoracic Oncology Program for Maine Medical Center and MaineHealth Oncology Service Line. The candidate will be clinically active in the growing Section of Surgical Oncology; join a robust and highly interactive interdisciplinary team (especially Pulmonary Medicine, Medical Oncology, and Radiation Oncology) devoted to the management and care of patients with thoracic malignancies; and have access to credible clinical translational research infrastructure at the Maine Medical Center Research Institute to lead and further grow a state-of-the-art program devoted to lung and esophageal cancer among other thoracic malignancies and benign diseases of the chest.

The position, depending on the candidate’s background and professional goals, also includes highly collaborative and potential leadership opportunities within the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery in the Cardiovascular Service Line at Maine Medical Center.  This surgeon leader will also work collaboratively with the Physician Leader and Surgical Oncology Leader to grow thoracic surgery programs in a highly integrated and patient-centered manner within the MaineHealth System Oncology Service Line.  In addition to significant clinical experience (5 to 10 years), we are seeking an individual with a track record of successful participation and leadership in a progressive cancer center environment and experience in cancer clinical trials and research would be particularly valuable.

The candidate is expected to have completed surgical residency and fellowship training in Thoracic/Cardiothoracic Surgery, and be Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery.  The clinical job requires experience in the full range of contemporary thoracic surgical oncology (i.e., minimally invasive skills, VATS, and/or robotic VATS) and the surgical management of benign thoracic disease.  In addition to excellent surgical skills, the ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal and leadership skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment in a large and dynamic health system and flagship medical center.

Maine Medical Center (MMC) is an academic health center that serves as the anchor of the 12-hospital MaineHealth integrated delivery system in southern and central Maine and New Hampshire. MMC has achieved recognition as a “High Performing” Cancer Program by U.S. News and World Report, as well as accreditation by the Commission on Cancer (Comprehensive Academic Cancer Center), National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) and American College of Radiology (Radiation Oncology). This is a unique opportunity to join a talented and experienced team of surgical oncologists employed by MMC/(Maine Medical Partners Surgical Care). The position involves the education of residents from the MMC General Surgery Residency Program, pulmonary medicine fellows, and medical students from the Maine Medical Center-Tufts University School of Medicine.  The surgeon will have a faculty appointment at the Tufts University School of Medicine.
