 Client Overview
Presidio County is a large rural county in the mountains of Far West Texas that is designated as a health professional's shortage area as well as being medically and dentally underserved. There are two towns: Marfa (pop. 2200), located at the northern end of the county, and Presidio (pop. 5100), located 65 miles south on the Mexican border across the Rio Grande from Ojinaga, Chihuahua. Although Marfa (the county seat) has increasingly been recognized as a modern art center and attracts art enthusiasts, the entire county is one of the poorest in the United States. Presidio and Marfa are, respectively, 95% and 70% Hispanic.

Community Overview

Presidio County is in the Trans-Pecos region of southwest Texas, a large rural mountainous area within the Chihuahuan desert. It is very beautiful, and the Marfa Plateau (elev. 5,000 ft.) has an outstanding high-desert climate with an average of 245 sunny days/year.

The county is bounded on the south and west for 135 miles by the Rio Grande and Mexico. To the north and west are the rolling plains of the Marfa Plateau and the Highland Country. In the central, far western, and southeastern areas of the county are some of the highest mountain ranges in Texas.

Presidio is close to New Mexico, with Big Bend National Park to the south. Guadalupe Mountains National Park and Carlsbad Caverns are also within easy driving distance. Other attractions include the University of Texas McDonald Observatory, historic sites at Fort Davis and Fort Leaton, Sul Ross University in Alpine, the Chinati Foundation Museum in Marfa and numerous art galleries. Biking, tour biking, and hiking are popular activities in the area. The landscape and cultural opportunities here attract artists, writers and tourists from all over the world.

Interested candidates should be comfortable with living in a remote and sparsely populated location. The nearest hospital is in Alpine, 25 miles from Marfa and 85 miles from Presidio. The nearest Wal-Mart is 90 miles away.
