Community Overview

Mission, Texas is located in the southern tip of Texas, near the Texas-Mexico border. Sunny skies and warm weather attracts snowbirds to Mission campgrounds.

Attractions:
The crown jewel of Rio Grande Valley parks, Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, well deserves its status as headquarters of the World Birding Center. Birders across the nation know Bentsen as a treasure trove of 'valley specialties' --those birds found nowhere else in the United States but in deepest South Texas-- and 'Mexican vagrants' rare visitors from across the Rio Grande. The 760-acre Bentsen-RGV State Park, together with more than 1,700 acres of adjoining federal refuge land, promises year-round nature adventures in the richest birding area north of the Mexican border.
Another place of interest for wildlife watchers visiting a Mission campground is Anzalduas County Park, which features the Anzalduas Dam. It's a nice place for and watch for birds and butterflies.
Mission has several butterfly gardens throughout the town, including the Nature and Butterfly EXPO - Unlike various butterfly conservatories that have been built across the United States, Mission's North American Butterfly Association (NABA) International Butterfly Park provides intensive outdoor gardens of native nectar plants and specific caterpillar-host plants as well as natural habitat to attract large numbers of wild butterflies and conserve rare native butterflies.
There's plenty of outdoor recreation in Mission. Some Mission parks offer direct access to the Rio Grande River. It's easy to spend the day enjoying the river fishing or boating. Some Mission campgrounds are conveniently located to some of the few spots in the Rio Grande Valley where there is water skiing on the Rio Grande River. Go skiing or rent a canoe or kayak and float along the river, enjoying the spectacular natural habitat that is home to more than 350 species of birds.
Golfers certainly won't be disappointed in the local courses. There are several conveniently located year-round courses available.
For a taste of international flavor, Mission is just a short drive from Reynosa or Nuevo Progresso, Mexico. Spend the day shopping for handcrafted items, enjoy authentic Mexican cuisine and clap to the music of mariachis.
