Oshkosh is flanked by Lake Winnebago on the east and Lake Butte des Morts on the west, with the Fox River running between. This community has thrived since settlers arrived in 1836. The lumber mills first brought renown to the community, but, over time, the manufacturing industry diversified and flourished. As manufacturing increased, so did the popuulation, now reaching approximately 85,000, and, as population grew, so did the demand for new retail establishments, educational opportunity, a strong infrastructure, hotels and restaurants, cultural amenities, recreational facilities,etc. Oshkosh has met the challenge.
DEMOGRAPHICS
Manufacturing makes up 22.3 percent of employment distribution, followed closely by education, health and social services at 22.2 percent. Retail makes up 14.9 percentof the work force. The mean average professional income runs approximately $4,570 per month, while skilled labor runs between $1,591 and $2,746. Per capita income is $28,704. The largest age group falls into the 15- to 44-year range. The median value of homes is $91,200. New home construction has increased significantly over the last five years, averaging about 150 new units annually.
EDUCATION
Oshkosh students rank significantly higher on ACT scores than the national average in English, mathematics, reading, and science. In addition to the public school system, Oshkosh is also home to Unified Catholic Schools and Valley Christian Schools. The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh offers curriculum to accommodate both bachelor and masters degrees, and Fox Valley Technical College offers 12 associate degrees in eight programs. In cooperation with Oshkosh Area School District, the Chamber of Commerce sponsors an annual career fair, job shadowing, Take YourChild to Work Day,and youth apprenticeships.
