 Job Description

In Gilmer, TX: Texas Association of Community Health Centers is seeking a full-time Family Medicine Physician to provide preventative and primary medical care for patients in a community health setting. Staff Physician must be able to treat patients from a diversity of social and ethnic backgrounds and to work creatively as a member of a health oriented team composed of health professions from a variety of disciplines for the healing and betterment of the center's patients. We are looking for an energetic, forward-thinking and creative individual with high ethical standards and the ability to work independently and effectively under pressure.

EDUCATION, LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS: Graduation from an accredited medical school, completion of approved post-graduate training, Board certification in Family Medicine, and an unrestricted Texas Medical license, plus one (1) year of post-residency practice experience as a physician giving direct patient care. Current Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and Department of Public Safety (DPS) registrations for the purpose of writing prescriptions is also required. Must be able to obtain courtesy hospital privileges at designated area hospitals, if required for specialty. Valid Texas Driver's License, appropriate driving record and auto liability insurance that meets the minimum required by State of Texas statute are required.

SKILLS:
-Knowledge of advanced principles of health promotion, prevention and motivation.
-Knowledge of protocols in general and an ability to quickly gain specific knowledge of the Center's current operational protocols.
-Knowledge of medical terminology and appropriate abbreviations.
-Demonstrates knowledge of the Texas Medical Practice Act.
-Ability to document, with clarity, all information relevant to a patient's needs.
-Ability to effectively present information in small group situations to patients, Center staff, and the general public.
-Ability to use office equipment including but not limited to computers, fax machines, telephones and copiers.
Able to schedule work activities according to priority.
-Superior organizational and problem solving skills.
-Familiarity with computer programs including Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.

 Client Overview
This federally qualified health center was founded in 1998 and serves the people of Gregg county. This service area has been designated as a Medically Underserved Area. The center provides services such as dental, OB/Gyn, general medicine, pediatrics, WIC, laboratory, social services, nutritional counseling, health education, integrated eligibility, and natural family planning. The clinic also provides family planning, HIV/AIDS counseling/testing, substance abuse counseling and mental health counseling along with marriage enrichement classes.

Patients of the center receive high quality OB/GYN, pediatric, mental health, dental and adult primary care at one of 3 clinic locations in Longview, Gilmer and Kilgore. Each of the specialties is lead by one or more MDs who practice on site with Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants. While the main location in Longview provides a majority of care, the Gilmer and Kilgore satellite locations have greatly improved access for patients who live or work in closer proximity to these smaller communities. While the Center began as a women's health clinic, it has expanded to a whole family healthcare provider. In addition to operating as an FQHC, the center offers multiple state and federally funded programs to patients which greatly decreases medical costs for patients who need these services most.

Services include comprehensive state and federally funded social service programs that support the families of East Texas in a 23 county area. Substance abuse prevention programs provide curriculum based education in the schools, as well as and after hours community groups for parents and their children to combat peer pressure and learn coping mechanisms as a family. Pregnancy Case Management is available to those women who are identified as at risk for substance abuse during their pregnancy. Substance abuse outpatient programs are available for both adolescents and adults, providing individual and group sessions, as well as case management and home visits. HIV Prevention program focuses on African American males and provides weekly education sessions for college students. HIV Support Services provides mental health, dental, health insurance reimbursement, medication assistance, and emergency financial assistance to those with HIV/AIDS. Project REACH targets healthy adolescent activities, leadership opportunities, and building community opportunities for the youth through asset building and working with at risk youth. Finally, WIC (Women, Infants, Children) program helps pregnant women, new mothers and young children eat well, learn about nutrition, and stay healthy by providing nutrition education, counseling, foods, and health care referrals.

Community Overview
Gilmer is a small, friendly community located approximately 21 miles NW from Longview, TX. Longview is the regional shopping center for all East Texas.
