 Job Description

Maine Medical Partners Neurology is seeking a full-time board certified/eligible Neurologist to practice primarily inpatient general neurology.  Fellowship training/special interest in vascular neurology or neuro-ICU would be welcome but is not required.

Primary inpatient responsibilities are at Maine Medical Center (MMC), the state’s leading tertiary care hospital and Level 1 Trauma Center, and the major neurological and neurosurgical referral center for Maine and Eastern New Hampshire.  MMC has 637 licensed beds and admits roughly one thousand ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke patients per year.  MMC has a full complement of residencies and fellowships, and is integrated with Tufts University Medical School.

The inpatient neurohospitalist program covers all general and vascular neurology consultations in the hospital.  Neurohospitalist coverage will involve approximately twelve 12 hour shifts per month.  The neurohospitalist is assisted by 12 hours of nurse practitioner coverage daily.  In addition, the position entails coverage of the Telestroke network, of which there are currently five hospitals engaged.  The position also involves supervision of a NP-run stroke follow up clinic 1-2 days per month.

We are currently a Primary Stroke Center and are in the process of building towards Comprehensive Stroke Center status. Our staff presently consists of three certified Vascular Neurologists, one neurointensivist, three endovascular specialists from the Neurosurgery and Radiology departments who provide 24/7 coverage for interventional stroke therapy, and four fulltime diagnostic neuroradiologists.

The Neurology Division consists of 19 physicians, including 5 Pediatric Neurologists, 8 nurse practitioners, on-site MRI and a neurodiagnostic lab. The Neurology group has been a premiere site for neurologic care in Maine since 1988.  The practice works closely with the Neuroscience Institute at Maine Medical Center to further develop the Neuroscience Centers of Excellence which supports the initiatives of our Stroke, Epilepsy, Movement Disorders and Multiple Sclerosis programs.  The practice includes opportunities both to teach medical students and residents and to pursue research through the Maine Medical Center Research Institute.

The successful candidate will be employed by Maine Medical Partners (MMP), a subsidiary of Maine Medical Center and Maine’s largest multi-specialty group, serving the health care needs of patients throughout Maine and Northern New England.  This high quality team of more than 500 physicians and 200 advanced practice professionals provides a wide range of hospital based, primary, specialty, and sub-specialty adult and pediatric care delivered throughout a network of 30 locations across the State, acting as a regional referral network.

Situated on the Maine coast, Portland offers the best of urban sophistication combined with small-town friendliness.  The area provides four season recreational opportunities, such as skiing, hiking, sailing, and miles of beautiful beaches.  Just two hours north of Boston, this is an exceptionally diverse and vibrant community.
