 Job Description

Maine Medical Partners is seeking a Medical Director of Primary Care to provide medical group leadership in the planning, design, implementation and evaluation of their primary care strategies and initiatives.  This is an excellent opportunity for a highly motivated individual interested in having a key role in the planning and development of Maine Medical Partner’s primary care growth strategies, and in shaping the health care delivery system in our community and in Maine.

Maine Medical Partners (MMP), a subsidiary of Maine Medical Center, has committed to a new leadership structure of pairing physician leaders with administrative leaders.  The Medical Director will be a visible and inspirational physician leader and engage Maine Medical Partners physicians and clinicians to align with MMP’s strategies and vision. The Medical Director is a vital link to our clinical practice and is therefore expected to split time between clinical practice (40%) and leadership (60%).

In partnership with the Administrative Director of Primary Care, the Medical Director is responsible for the clinical quality and performance of the division and will lead a team of Associate Medical Directors who are accountable for translating strategies into day-to-day practice operations, and the coordination of standardization and continuous improvement efforts across MMP.  Candidates should have a strong understanding of the principals of patient centered care, physician compensation systems, medical technology, including electronic medical records, and quality/service improvement strategies.

MMP’s primary care offices include Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine and Internal Medicine/Pediatrics.  The practices include over 50 physicians in 10 locations throughout the greater Portland area.  Some offices are residency teaching sites, with residents serving as primary care physicians for a panel of patients, and all provide medical student education.

Maine Medical Center, located in Portland, Maine, has 637 licensed beds and is the state’s leading tertiary hospital and Level 1 Trauma Center, with a full complement of residencies and fellowships and an integral part of the Tufts University Medical School.

The successful candidate will be employed by Maine Medical Partners (MMP), Maine’s largest multi-specialty group serving the health care needs of patients throughout Maine and Northern New England.  This high quality team of more than 370 physicians and 150 advanced practice professionals provides a wide range of hospital based, primary, specialty, and sub-specialty adult and pediatric care delivered throughout a network of 30 locations across the State and acts as a regional referral network.

An MD or DO from an accredited medical school is required.  Candidates must have a minimum of 5 years of clinical practice in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Pediatrics or Internal Medicine/Pediatrics, and 5 years of progressive management experience.  An MBA or MMM is desirable but not required.

Situated on the Maine coast, Portland offers the best of urban sophistication combined with small-town friendliness.  The area provides four season recreational opportunities, such as skiing, hiking, sailing, and miles of beautiful beaches.  Just two hours north of Boston, this is an exceptionally diverse and vibrant community.  Portland is consistently voted one of the top spots in America to raise a family and was named America’s most livable city by Forbes Magazine in 2009.
