Community Overview |
If you're looking for a change, looking for a place where you can slow down, do the things you love to do, not the things you have to do, then we'd love to have you here in Brownwood. Sure there's a lot going on, but you won't feel like a piston in an engine here. You won't get stuck in traffic or need to take a day off to take a break. You'll find that the lifestyle in Brownwood is one where front porch visits with the neighbors are the norm. With a friendly population of about 22,000, we don't have traffic problems; we don't have big-city crime; we don't have a lot of the baggage that bigger cities carry. You can see the stars at night; you can get away in a matter of minutes; you can get the good life at a great price and a reasonable pace. If, however, you want a weekend taste of the metropolitan life, it's within arm's reach. The entertainments of both Austin and DFW are less than 3 hours' easy drive away, and Waco is just over 2.
In addition to Brownwood's strong academic programs, area schools provide a wide array of student programs to meet the needs created by diversity. The award-winning Early Independent School District is one of the BEST in the entire state of Texas! Many families move to Early just to be able to have their children attend this outstanding school system. Private school facilities include Living Word Christian Academy and Trinity Christian Academy. University and vocational facilities in the area include Howard Payne University, Texas State Technical College, Central Texas Commercial College and Ranger Junior College. Several other universities and junior colleges are within easy commuting distance.
The area boasts numerous outdoor recreational opportunities. Lake Brownwood State Park encompasses a 7,300-acre body of water featuring 538 acres of recreational offerings such as swimming, fishing, boating, hiking trails, camping areas, nature study opportunities, shelters, cabins and much more. If you prefer to be a little closer to nature, visit the nearby Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge for hiking, biking and bird watching. Other recreation in the area includes team sports leagues. You can participate in baseball, softball, soccer, basketball and volleyball leagues. Golf is also popular at both our private and public courses. Brownwood Country Club features a 6,280-yard layout on Bermuda grass that offers a par of 72 and a slope rating of 125. Brownwood maintains over 18 city parks which include baseball fields, basketball courts, tennis courts, sand volleyball pits, public swimming pools, picnic pavilions, hiking trails and RV hookups.
