 Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

The Medical Director is responsible for providing physician leadership to the medical staff, and to the Hospital Leadership Team.  This position partners with the hospital Operational Vice President of Perioperative Services, while advising Provider Relations, the Quality Manager and Medical Staff Office support staff.  This role provides leadership support at both Appleton Medical Center in Appleton, WI and Theda Clark Medical Center located in Neenah, WI.

Together the Perioperative Medical Director and Perioperative VP will:

  • Develop and nurture relationships and engagement between practicing physicians, and between physicians and ThedaCare leadership.
  • Develop and maintain effective communication vehicles and awareness between independent physicians and ThedaCare.  Actively help to articulate, to resolve, and to collaborate on issues/concerns involving the medical staff and ThedaCare.
  • Assure that the activities of the formal medical staff, especially as they pertain to quality assurance, credentialing, policy and procedure development, and Joint Commission accreditation, are effectively supported.
  • Lead use of ThedaCare Improvement System (TIS) tools and standard work to achieve quality and financial goals on an annual basis including leading efforts to optimize use of technology, resources and supplies.
  • Assume leadership role in developing a sustainable culture of patient and employee safety.
  • Promote the mission and vision of the ThedaCare organization.
  • Provide leadership to physicians, staff, volunteers and others who carry out the mission of the organization.

In addition, the Medical Director will:

  • Actively engage as a member of the Hospital Leadership Team
  • Attend or delegate proxy attendance at designated Committees and Improvement efforts and other meetings as required to fulfill the duties and responsibilities.
  • May be asked to serve on the ThedaCare System CMO’s Medical Director Leadership Team and the ThedaCare Quality Council.
  • Champion new ideas in best practice, support system changes, lead/support containment activities, role model lean thinking.
  • Serve as spokesperson for AMC/TCMC as requested.

Position Requirements:

  • MD/DO Degree with OR experience (surgeon or anesthesiologist)
  • Hands-on experience in performance, quality and process improvement
  • Recent hospital experience with current demonstrated knowledge of how hospitals work
  • Respected practitioner and physician leader:
    • Direct management and business leadership experience
  • Demonstrated ability to build rapport and consensus between parties with potentially differing agendas
  • An enthusiastic and nurturing team builder with a track record of developing others to maximize their potential
  • Demonstrated ability to assertively address conflicts and successfully correct inappropriate and non-constructive behavior

Desired Skill and Experience:

  • Masters Degree in business or leadership
  • Exposure to EPIC or other EHR systems
  • Exposure to independent practice/physician work, needs and issues
  • Training and experience with Lean and process improvement tools
  • Has sponsored or been accountable for leading a major initiative
  • Training in conflict resolution
  • Previous leadership experience
