 Job Description

Maine Medical Center is seeking a Surgical Oncologist to provide leadership to its statewide surgical oncology program as Director of Surgical Oncology at Maine Medical Center and for MaineHealth, including general surgical oncology (liver, pancreas, endocrine, melanoma, GI, soft tissue) and breast surgery.  In this role, the Director will work directly with surgical oncologists and indirectly with related oncologic surgeons (breast, urologic, thoracic, otolaryngology, colorectal, Gynecologic, Neuro) concerning clinical, academic and administrative activities. This individual will also serve as the surgical oncology leader of the oncology service line, reporting directly to the Physician Leader of Oncology. The Director will also serve as the liaison between Maine Medical Center and the MaineHealth system as it relates to the provision of integrated, patient-centered system level oncology services.

The Director is responsible for establishing the vision and strategic direction for surgical oncology services at MMC, as well as developing, implementing and overseeing the standardization and improvement of high quality, value-based surgical oncology care and contributing to a robust clinical translational research program. In addition to significant clinical experience (5 to 10 years), we are seeking an individual with a track record of successful leadership in a progressive cancer center environment and experience in cancer clinical trials and research would be particularly valuable.

The candidate is expected to have completed a residency in General Surgery, and be Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery.  The applicant must have completed a Society of Surgical Oncology approved fellowship or meet appropriate “grandfathered” requirements. The clinical job requires experience in the full range of surgical oncology, including research (i.e., GI, hepatobiliary and pancreatic procedures, as well as melanoma, sarcoma and palliative oncological surgery).  In addition to excellent surgical skills, the ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal and leadership skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment in a large and dynamic health system and flagship medical center.

Maine Medical Center (MMC) is academic health center that serves as the anchor of the 12 hospital MaineHealth integrated delivery system in southern and central Maine and New Hampshire. The Maine Medical Center Cancer Institute is Maine's leading provider of cancer care and home to the state’s most comprehensive array of award-winning cancer care and support resources. MMC has achieved recognition as a “High Performing” Cancer Program by U.S. News and World Report, as well as accreditation by the Commission on Cancer (Comprehensive Academic Cancer Center), National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) and American College of Radiology (Radiation Oncology).

The position involves the education of residents from the MMC General Surgery Residency Program and medical students from the Maine Medical Center-Tufts University School of Medicine program.  The surgeon will have a faculty appointment at the Tufts University School of Medicine. There is an opportunity to pursue research through the Maine Medical Center Research Institute.  The surgical oncology staff is committed and among the leading groups of cancer care physician providers participating in a robust national cancer clinical trials portfolio.
