Community Overview

Midland's warm climate, friendly people, and central location are the primary reasons for the city's popularity. The area's low humidity, combined with warm days and cool nights, contributes to the year round comfort of residents. Though Midland enjoys over 300 sunny days each year, the average heat index during the summer is lower than that in Dallas, San Antonio, or Austin. During the winter, the climate is mild, similar to other desert climates in the southwest.

A combination of factors, including a low crime rate, ample water supplies, quality law enforcement and fire protection, and clean wide streets provide a sense of security and a high quality of life. As stated in American Demographics magazine, "a well maintained infrastructure and quality educational system combined with outstanding cultural, sports, recreation, health care, and convention facilities make Midland one of the nation's most livable communities."

Midland International Airport provides non-stop service to five major US cities; Austin, Albuquerque, Dallas, Houston and Las Vegas.

Within a 105-mile radius of Midland are a total of eight universities, colleges and junior colleges. Midland College is one of only three community colleges in the state that offers a baccalaureate degree, in addition to over 50 associate degree and certificate programs. The Midland/Odessa Symphony and Chorale presents outstanding pops and classical musical performances featuring renowned guest artists. Midland offers a wide variety of restaurants and nightclubs, including nationally known establishments as well as fine locally owned restaurants. And after dinner, take in a movie on one of Midland's 17 screens. Young people can enjoy educational, interactive fun at the Fredda Turner Durham Children's Museum, the Blakemore Planetarium, or the Nita Stewart Haley Library and J. Evetts Haley History Center.
