 Job Description

In San Antonio, TX: Texas Association of Community Health Centers is seeking a full-time Family Medicine Physician.  Sign on bonus included!

Job Overview:

  • Provides quality primary health care for treatment of a variety of medical conditions to community-based patient population that is diverse in age, educational background and income level
  • Provide general physical examinations and makes medical evaluations to diagnose and treat a variety of medical illnesses and diseases
  • Analyzes test findings and processes all "normal" and "abnormal" lab results
  • Administers appropriate treatment plans and prescribes medications to treat the patient's medical condition
  • Promote health among patients by advising patients on diet, hygiene and disease prevention
  • Document and charts all treatment modalities administered and preventive medicine prescribed
  • Make referrals to specialists when necessary for treatment of medical conditions
  • Work as a member of the medical staff in implementing the objectives and the Clinical Outcome measures by Life Cycle Groups
  • Work as a member of the medical staff in identifying the medical issues of the community and to develop best treatment plans
  • Provide medical assistance to other Physicians and mid-level providers as necessary or provides coverage for patients in the absence of their regular treating physicians
  • Keeps Medical Director informed of trends and increases in numbers of medical conditions and illnesses being reported by patients
  • Keep up with CME requirements for Texas License and Board Certification
  • Abide by infection control policies and procedures as dictated in the Infection Control Manual
  • Abide by policies and procedures on hazardous materials as dictated in the Employee Safety Manual
  • Participate in after hour care, to include patient calls and hospital coverage
  • Participates in the agency's Quality Improvement Program
  • Family Medicine Provider: Demonstrates competence with patients aged 0 and older
  • EHR: NextGen

 Job Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Preferred 2 years post graduate experience
  • Education: Graduate from a U.S. approved Medical School
  • Completion of required Internship and/or Residency Program
  • Licensed by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners
  • Experience: Outpatient Health Care clinic preferred
  • Current Controlled Substances Registration Certificate issued by DEA
  • Must be eligible for Medical Malpractice Liability Coverage under FTCA
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position
  • Must be able to meet the attendance requirements of the position
  • Must not pose a threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace
  • Physical ability to lift up to 20 pounds unassisted
  • Must be able to deliver excellent customer service, externally and internally

History of group / practice:

This Center was founded in 1971, operating one counseling program for children and adolescents. This center was an outgrowth of the National Institutes of Mental Health-funded and Our Lady of the Lake University-sponsored Mexican-American Mental Health Education Project, which aimed to increase the number of Mexican-American social workers providing culturally-competent mental health services in San Antonio’s Westside and Southside barrios. Faced with a loss of funding, the community advisory board opted in 1973 to incorporate as a nonprofit in order to secure the independent funding needed to continue providing services.

In the mid-1970s, medical residents from the School of Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio conducted health screenings on a elderly center clients, finding a disturbing prevalence of undiagnosed medical conditions. These findings raised awareness among staff and community members of the severe shortage of affordable, culturally competent, and geographically accessible primary care services on the Southside. In 1979 the center opened its first medical clinic, staffed by one physician and one midlevel provider. The clinic was overwhelmed from the start, and in 1981 the  flagship medical clinic was opened.

Responding to the needs of San Antonio’s most vulnerable residents, the center has expanded steadily ever since. The first dental clinic was opened in 1987, with the opening of the OB-Gyn/perinatal clinic following in 1988. The Health Care for the Homeless program, through which the center now co-locates clinics with six area homeless shelters, started in 1989. The Ryan White program, which provides early intervention services for people recently diagnosed with HIV infection, was begun in 1992.

Several important partnerships were forged over the decades. A number of other federal, state, and local partnerships have provided the center with funding and in-kind support, and have allowed CDB to integrate services across disciplines and systems.
