 Job Description

Maine Medical Center’s Department of Psychiatry is seeking a Director of the Division of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry.

The preferred candidate will be Board Certified in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry with exceptional leadership skills in an academic setting, with the ability to foster a spirit of unity and collaboration with a variety of clinical and administrative stakeholders across organizational boundaries, with a proven commitment to supporting medical and graduate teaching and education.  The selected candidate will provide clinical and academic leadership for Child & Adolescent faculty at Maine Medical Center, Spring Harbor Hospital, and Maine Behavioral Healthcare.

The Division of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry offers a continuum of services which includes the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Clinic at Maine Medical Center, psychiatric inpatient services at Spring Harbor Hospital, and Maine Behavioral Health Care, which is a network of community mental health services throughout Great Portland, Southern Maine, and Mid-Coast Maine.  Programs in the Division include outpatient specialty tracks for severe and persistent mental illness, mood disorders and emotional dysregulation, and patients with complex pediatric disorders; consultation to The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital and to pediatric and family medicine practices, an innovative program of collaboration with pediatricians, the Child Psychiatry Access Program, and a state-wide program of integration of mental health services and primary care.  Spring Harbor Hospital has 42 beds dedicated to child and adolescent psychiatry, with programs for children, adolescents and those with Autism Spectrum and other developmental disorders.  The Developmental Disorders Program is the center for the national Autism and Developmental Disorders Inpatient Disorders Collaborative (ADDIRC), which has initiated important research, and has recently added a new outpatient and partial hospitalization center.  The implementation of evidence-informed practices and active early intervention are emphasized in all programs, and championed throughout the state and region.

Research in the Division currently includes multiple projects under ADDIRC, a new grant-funded program in early psychotic disorders, study of the role of insight in psychosis, and an inpatient-outpatient program of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy for Adolescents.

The training program is robust, with excellent Fellows, and innovative components including the use of Standardized Patients for training exercises, a “Buddy System” connecting CAP Fellows and Pediatric Residents, and a recently expanded focus on family psychotherapy.

Situated on the Maine coast, Portland offers the best of urban sophistication combined with small-town friendliness, safety, and excellent schools.  The area provides four season recreational opportunities, such as skiing, hiking, sailing, and miles of beautiful beaches.  Just two hours north of Boston, this is an exceptionally diverse and vibrant community.

The position of Director of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry is a remarkable opportunity for one who can be a leader in clinical innovation, education, research, and advocacy involving the mental health needs of children, adolescents, and their families.
