 Job Description

Loma Linda University Faculty Medical Group, Department of Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery is seeking a Nurse Practitioner to join our team.

The thoracic surgery service provides comprehensive care for both benign and malignant conditions of the chest.  As such, continuity of care from the outpatient to the inpatient setting is crucial, especially for the multitude of patients who require years of continued outpatient follow up.  The Thoracic Surgery Nurse Practitioner (TSNP) is the leader of this comprehensive care.  As such, the TSNP is expected to educate and coordinate the thoracic surgery clinic staff, residents, and fellows in order to succeed.  A TSNP must be kind, self-assured, highly organized, and familiar with electronic medical records, interested in expanding their skills and teaching those skills to others.  In essence, the TSNP is willing to become a comprehensive practitioner and educator in thoracic surgery.

The TSNP will obtain privileges to work at all medical facilities where the thoracic surgery service rotates.  At each facility, the TSNP shall create a streamlined process whereby patients have the following:

  • timely access to clinical office staff and surgeons
  • education regarding their diagnosis
  • coordinated outpatient and inpatient care
  • prompt communication to the essential members of their healthcare team

Other duties include the following:

  • development and maintenance of a thoracic surgical oncology database to ensure patients receive the necessary outpatient cancer surveillance imaging
  • participation in the development and implementation of clinical pathways for inpatient and outpatient care
  • evaluating/managing wounds, chest tubes, and gastrostomy/jejunostomy tubes
  • scheduled inpatient ward rounds
  • weekly clinic preparation
  • weekly patient preoperative clearance verification

This is not a J1 position. 

 Job Requirements

Weekly Clinic Preparation

New patients

Screen new referrals for essential information/imaging from referring providers and ensure this is available at the time of the first clinic visit.

Follow-up patients

  • Review the most recent hospital or clinic note
  • Obtain imaging and test results if indicated

Long term follow up:

  • If required tests are not yet completed, inform the patient, arrange for tests, and reschedule appointment ASAP

Weekly Preoperative Clearance

Review OR case schedule and for each outpatient:

  • Collect necessary preoperative test results
  • Ensure imaging is available
  • If missing test results, contact patient to get tests completed
  • If patient is unable to complete preop testing, notify MD promptly

Communication to Health Care Team

Provide copies of clinic notes/letter

Provide copies of discharge summary, op reports, and pathology results

Ward Rounds

Focus is familiarity with patients’ hospital course and ensuring continuity of postoperative care

Assist residents/fellows with inpatient care as needed

Implementation of patient care pathways/protocols including education of nursing teams
