Location: Portland, ME,

 Job Description

The Palliative Care Fellowship Program at Maine Medical Center is seeking an experienced Clinician Educator to serve as Fellowship Program Director.

Maine Medical Center (MMC) has 637 licensed beds and is the state’s leading tertiary hospital and a Level 1 Trauma Center, with a full complement of residencies and fellowships and an integral part of the Tufts University Medical School.  Maine Medical Center supports over 230 residents and fellows in 12 residency programs and 9 fellowship programs approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Maine Medical Center’s Palliative Care Fellowship Program provides Hospice and Palliative Care training opportunities in acute hospital care, inpatient consultation service, and an outpatient clinic.  The Fellowship Program at MMC also offers a block with Home Hospice Care organizations, and an elective block to allow Fellows more focused time to study in an area of professional interest or medical research.

Maine Medical Center partners with the The Department of Veterans Affairs for a portion of their program, enabling Fellows to work in a multi-level facility. The Togas VA Medical Center, located five miles east of Augusta, is a 67-operating bed facility with general medical, surgical, intermediate and mental health beds, as well as a 100-bed Nursing Home consisting of 50 Skilled and Longer Stay beds, and a 50-bed Dementia Unit.  Fellows spend time in a dedicated Palliative Care/Hospice wing and a Long Term Care unit.

Candidates must have demonstrated ability as a clinician, medical educator, and administrator, and have an understanding of and commitment to palliative care, both in the hospital and in the outpatient setting.  The Program Director will ensure that Fellows are properly supervised in carrying out their patient care responsibilities and develop and maintain an effective curriculum that complies with all elements of the Next Accreditation System including ACGME core competencies, milestones and Clinical Learning Environment Reviews.

The Director will guide strategic planning for the ongoing growth and development of the Fellowship program, in cooperation with the Departments of Internal Medicine and Maine Medical Center, and act as a liaison between the fellowship program, the outpatient teaching sites, Home Hospice Care organizations, and the VA Hospital in Togas.  The Fellowship Director is a vital link to our clinical practice and is therefore expected to spend up to 75% of their time in clinical practice.

The Fellowship Program Director will be the faculty member responsible for the operation of the Palliative Care Fellowship Program with assistance from the Chairs of Medicine and Internal Medicine, and the Fellowship Program Coordinator.  Candidates must be Board Certified in Hospice and Palliative Care by the American Board of Hospice and Palliative Care, or possess specialty qualifications acceptable to the Fellowship Review Committee.
