El Centro de Corazón is a community-based Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), which provides primary health care , behavioral health, and dental services in the East End of Houston. In June 1994 El Centro de Corazón was established as a community-based social service organization for East End families, with an initial focus on early childhood development. In 1996 El Centro established a mental health program, which has since expanded into eleven Houston Independent School District (HISD) schools and its three clinic sites: Navigation Site, Eastwood Clinic and Magnolia Clinic. In 1996 El Centro added an after school program for girls. In October 2003 the agency expanded its services to include primary care by merging with Eastwood Health Clinic, a non-profit clinic which had been providing primary care in the East End since 1983. By December 1, 2003 El Centro was deemed a Federally Qualified Health Center and in February 2004 El Centro began primary care at its Navigation site. The Bureau of Primary Health Care approved El Centro¿s merger with Eastwood Health Clinic in July 2004, Behavioral Health Services began in October of that same year. In February 2005 prenatal services opened its doors at the Navigation site
