 Job Description

The Fayetteville VA Coastal Health Care System is actively recruiting for transitioning military allied health professionals to serve as Intermediate Care Technician (ICT) interns. 

The Intermediate Care Technician (ICT) is a career for former military combat medics, medical technicians, and hospital corpsmen. Individuals that are selected as Intermediate Care Technician Interns must have a medical background as an enlisted allied health professional and possess the Military Occupational Specialty job code within the 4NO, 68W, or HM occupational series.

To qualify for this internship, applicants must meet all requirements by closing date of this announcement.

*NOTE* If selected, there is no guarantee of employment with the US Department of Veterans Affairs at the conclusion of the ICT Internship Program.

 Job Requirements

Applicants must have command approval, submit a *current resume* and will be asked to provide their *latest performance evaluation* and a *Statement of Service*after their application has been reviewed.

Interns must have a medical background as enlisted allied health professionals and possess the Military Occupational Specialty job code within the 4NO, 68W, or HM occupational series.

 Practice Information
Practice Description :

This position serves as an advanced technician for patients who are present for treatment within the VA Healthcare System.

ICTs operate within clearly defined clinical competencies. These tasks are not all inclusive and require demonstrating appropriate training and documented competence prior to their performance. The ICT intern may assist with or perform other related approved technical health care procedures under the direction and supervision of licensed personnel as training and competency is demonstrated and documented.

Typical duties include but are not limited to:

  • Performing Diagnostic Tests: Vital Signs, EKG, Nero and Vascular Exam.
  • Screen Patients: Emergent/Non-emergent Medical Conditions, Order Appropriate Diagnostic Studies and Perform a Wide Range of Treatment Procedures (under the direction of the supervising physician)
  • Independently Recognized Life-Threatening Situations and Acts to Correct These According to Established National or Facility Protocols
  • Point of Care Testing
  • Uncomplicated Wound Closure example: simple one-layer lacerations, Scalp lacerations, Skin Stapling, Steristrips, Dermabond
  • Medication Administration
  • Starts Peripheral IVs
  • Venipuncture
  • NG Tube Placement
  • Nasogastric Lavage
  • Anterior Nasal Packing
  • Ear Irrigation- Cerumen and Foreign Body Removal
  • Eye Irrigation
  • Incision & Drainage of abscesses and Subungual Hematoma Drainage
  • Suture/Staple removal.
  • Foley Catheters Insertion and Bladder Irrigation
  • Splinting
  • Wound Care
  • Specimen Collection and Preparation: for processing including blood, tissue, urine, stool, and sputum
