 Job Description

Maine Medical Center and Maine Medical Partners is seeking a Medical Director of Surgical Care and Associate Surgery Service Line Physician Leader to provide physician leadership in the planning, design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of surgical specialty care strategies and initiatives.

Maine Medical Partners (MMP), a subsidiary of Maine Medical Center, has committed to a new leadership structure of pairing physician leaders with administrative leaders.  Candidates will partner with an administrative lead of surgical practices and oversee 5 Associate Surgeon Practice Leaders to direct over 70 surgeons in 17 divisions in the following specialties:   general surgery, cardiac, thoracic, pediatric, trauma/acute care, endocrine, vascular, general oncologic, breast, neurosurgical, orthopedic, ENT, transplant, gynecologic oncology and urologic.

The Medical Director will be expected to work with their administrative partner to improve operational and financial performance of the division and align these efforts with Maine Medical Center and the clinical service line, and maintain responsibility for managing the performance of the Service Line through data analysis, reporting and monitoring.  Candidates will contribute to the partnership among care givers, patients and families to provide safe and effective care at all levels.  The Medical Director is a vital link to our clinical practice and will therefore split time between clinical practice (40%) and leadership (60%).

Maine Medical Center, located in Portland, Maine, has 637 licensed beds and is the state’s leading tertiary hospital and Level 1 Trauma Center, with a full complement of residencies and fellowships and an integral part of the Tufts University Medical School.

The successful candidate will be employed by Maine Medical Partners (MMP), Maine’s largest multi-specialty group serving the health care needs of patients throughout Maine and Northern New England.  This high quality team of more than 370 physicians and 150 advanced practice professionals provides a wide range of hospital based, primary, specialty, and sub-specialty adult and pediatric care delivered throughout a network of 30 locations across the State and acts as a regional referral network.

An MD or DO from an accredited medical school is required.  Candidates must have a minimum of 5 years of clinical practice and 5 years of progressive management experience.  MBA/MMM is desirable but not required.

Situated on the Maine coast, Portland offers the best of urban sophistication combined with small-town friendliness.  The area provides four season recreational opportunities, such as skiing, hiking, sailing, and miles of beautiful beaches.  Just two hours north of Boston, this is an exceptionally diverse and vibrant community.
