 Job Description

The Division of Geriatrics at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine, is currently seeking a BE/BC Internist or Family Medicine physician with a fellowship or advanced training in Geriatrics to serve as Medical Director of the Acute Care for the Elders (ACE), the Hospital Elder Life (HELP) programs and to further develop an existing inpatient consultation service.  The position offers an exciting opportunity to begin development of a peri-surgical assessment and intervention program and a focus on Inpatient Quality, enabling Maine Medical Partners (MMP) Geriatrics and the MaineHealth system to provide exceptional care to older adults across the continuum of health care in Maine.

At Maine Medical Center, the ACE, encompasses multiple inpatient medical units with a goal of preventing complications of hospitalization and promoting care to get elders back home by preventing functional decline. HELP is an innovative, evidence based approach to delirium prevention for older patients.  Complementing these programs is an inpatient consults service where a core group of certified geriatricians see patients in consultation and follow patients during their hospitalization.

The Division of Geriatrics at Maine Medical Center has built a foundation for Maine’s elderly that encompasses all aspects of geriatric care, including inpatient and outpatient services, community resources, and access to healthcare practitioners specifically trained in geriatrics.  The Division of Geriatrics currently has 10 experienced physicians and 11 Advanced Practice Providers.  Maine Medical Center’s Geriatric Physicians, Physician Assistants, and Nurse Practitioners also provide ongoing primary patient care at area nursing homes, New England Rehabilitation Hospital of Portland, and Hospice of Southern Maine.

Maine Medical Center has 637 licensed beds and is the state’s leading tertiary hospital and Level 1 Trauma Center, with a full complement of residencies and fellowships and is an integral part of the Tufts University Medical School.  The candidate would have an academic appointment at Tufts University School of Medicine, and the position involves teaching and mentoring Residents, Geriatric Fellows and medical students.

The successful candidate will be employed by Maine Medical Partners (MMP), a subsidiary of Maine Medical Center and Maine’s largest multi-specialty group.  MMP serves the health care needs of patients throughout Maine and Northern New England.  This high quality team of more than 475 physicians and 150 advanced practice professionals provides a wide range of hospital based, primary, specialty, and sub-specialty adult and pediatric care delivered throughout a network of 30 locations across the State and acts as a regional referral network.

Situated on the Maine coast, Portland offers the best of urban sophistication combined with small-town friendliness.  The area provides four season recreational opportunities, such as skiing, hiking, sailing, and miles of beautiful beaches.  Just two hours north of Boston, this is an exceptionally diverse and vibrant community.  Portland is consistently voted one of the top spots in America to raise a family and was named America’s Foodiest Small Town by Bon Appetit Magazine.
