 Job Description

Maine Medical Partners Neurology is seeking a board-certified Neurologist who is Fellowship trained in Neurocritical care to enhance our inpatient Neurology programs.

The physician will attend at least one week per month on our dedicated neurocritical care admitting service, assuming primary responsibility for the care of patients with a wide variety of neurological and neurosurgical illnesses.  In addition to neurologic expertise, the ideal candidate will have excellent general medical critical care diagnostic and procedural skills, and feel comfortable with the management of complex patients with multisystemic illness. There is ample opportunity for consultation from a wide variety of specialists including a strong Pulmonary/Critical Care team with significant interest and experience with neurologic disease. Biweekly multidisciplinary rounds strengthen collegiality as well as patient care.

The physician will supervise and teach residents, fellows, medical students, and advanced practice providers in the ICU setting. An active interest in clinical research is encouraged; we are currently enrolling patients in five acute stroke studies and as the program expands, and as required as we continue to develop the program, dedicated research time would become available for the proper candidate.

The remainder of the physician’s time will be dedicated to our inpatient Stroke Service. We are currently a Primary Stroke Center, and are in the process of building towards Comprehensive Stroke Center status. Our staff presently contains two certified Vascular Neurologists, as well as three endovascular specialists from the Neurosurgery and Radiology departments who provide 24/7 coverage for interventional stroke therapy, and the radiology department has four fulltime diagnostic neuroradiologists.

Maine Medical Center admits roughly one thousand patients per year with stroke, both ischemic and hemorrhagic, with this volume likely to increase over time.  As in the ICU, Stroke Service responsibilities will include direct patient care as well as teaching and supervision of residents, medical students, and dedicated advanced practice providers. Protected administrative time for program building will be available.  We are in the process of organizing a state-wide telestroke program, therefore any expertise and/or interest in this program would be welcomed.

Maine Medical Center (MMC) has 637 licensed beds and is the state’s leading tertiary hospital and Level 1 Trauma Center, and the major neurological and neurosurgical referral center for Maine and Eastern New Hampshire.  MMC has a full complement of residencies and fellowships and is an integral part of the Tufts University Medical School, and candidates will have an academic appointment.  Neurology Grand Rounds are held weekly, and are augmented by frequent Cerebrovascular, Neuroradiology, and Neurocritical Care conferences.

Situated on the Maine coast, Portland offers the best of urban sophistication combined with small-town friendliness.  The area provides four season recreational opportunities, such as skiing, hiking, sailing, and miles of beautiful beaches.  Just two hours north of Boston, this is an exceptionally diverse and vibrant community.

This is a satisfying and rewarding practice opportunity and a perfect blend of academic and group medical practice, with excellent collegiality and collaboration.
