Evansville was established on 200 acres of land that Hugh McGary, Jr. purchased from the government in 1812. The town was named for General Robert M. Evans. Evans was an attorney and territorial legislator who helped McGary incorporate Evansville as a city. The town's incorporation was completed on January 27, 1847.
