 Job Description

Stephens Memorial Hospital, located in the beautiful town of Norway, Maine, is seeking a full time or part time BC/BE emergency medicine physician interested in practicing quality medicine in a community setting an hour from Portland.

Stephens Memorial Hospital, recognized by The Leapfrog Group in 2009 and in 2013 as one of the top rural hospitals in the nation, is a Critical Access Hospital with visits to the ED averaging over 21,000 per year.  There is a fully staffed labor and delivery unit with dedicated OB nurses, with specialty coverage that includes OB/GYN, orthopedics, general surgery, internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics and radiology, providing seamless follow up care with primary care physicians.

The emergency department has a dedicated SonoSite ultra sound and advanced airway equipment, on site CAT and MRI equipment, and individual treatment and exam rooms to enhance patient privacy. The PACE Paramedic Service is a department of the hospital and is the only paramedic-licensed service in Oxford County. The department maintains 24 hours per day, 7 days per week coverage, offering a minimum of two paramedics and two emergency medical technicians (EMTs).  Currently staffed with 8 full-time ED physicians, the emergency department sees a mix of patients including trauma (there are two nearby ski resorts), general medical, geriatric and pediatric (15%).

Stephens Memorial Hospital is a member of MaineHealth, the premier healthcare system in Maine, which includes Maine Medical Center, the state’s leading tertiary care center. Maine Medical Center has 637 licensed beds hospital and is an academic medical center with a full complement of residencies and fellowships, including a nationally recognized Emergency Medicine Residency Program.  Candidates will have an opportunity to teach and mentor medical students, as Stephens Memorial hospital is a teaching site for The Maine Medical Center – Tufts School of Medicine rural medicine program.

Nestled in the foothills of Oxford County, Norway is just 25 miles from nearby ski resorts offering spectacular skiing in the winter and hiking/biking during the summer, the White Mountains National Forest just west of the Oxford Hills, and a multitude of local lakes, rivers and nearby coastline offering splendid water-sporting activities.
